A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
