The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
