Historical Context
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and past encounters. The these sides have a special connection, also meeting in Forest's previous European adventure in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the premier competition final 46 years ago that entwines these two together, with the record-breaking signing Francis heading the only goal of a pretty miserable final to claim legendary status for the Forest supporters.
"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the revelry," noted the journalist. Their achievement was an outstanding achievement that it is difficult to imagine happening again – from Second Division to European stage in three seasons."
It's also interesting to reflect upon Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Swedish club to reach the final under manager Houghton.
This match is a far cry from that summit, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are full of confidence after defeating Liverpool convincingly at Anfield on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since 9 November following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The smart money is on the home team tonight.
Plenty of other action on offer in this live coverage. The Glasgow club have already been lost to a Braga this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the competition table at the middle of the group stage with no points whatsoever. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a late surge for a playoff spot.
