New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
