Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
